Earth Day 2021

Earth Day 2021

Simple things you can do this Earth Day to make a difference

Small Changes / Big Impact

Use a programmable thermostat to save 5%-15% on energy costs.
Clean the dryer’s lint filter. A dirty lint filter can use 30% more energy.
Use low-flow faucets and shower heads to save water and money.
Make recycling easier by putting recycle bins in each room.
Print on BOTH sides of the paper when you have to print something.
Use 100% recycled paper for printing. Recycled paper has come a long way!
Paperless billing. Almost all companies that accept credit cards allow for paperless billing.
Use your bank’s Automatic Bill Pay instead of writing checks.
Always use your television’s on/off switch. Leaving it on standby wastes energy.
Use Power Strips. Plug home electronics, such as TVs and DVD players, into power strips; turn the power strips off when not in use.
Cover saucepans with lids whenever possible to reduce cooking time, which saves energy.
Inflate your tires to preserve the life of your tires, save gas, and money.
Stop junk mail. Save trees, water, and emissions by ending junk mail. Go to optoutprescreen.com to stop receiving pre-approved offers and go to catalogchoice.org to stop receiving unsolicited catalogs.

Donate / Recycle

Use Ridwell! They come to your front door to make sure your stuff finds a new home.
Donate furniture and clothing instead of throwing them away. Northwest Center will even pick these items up from your home.
Donate old cell phones. Recycle yours with Call2Recycle.org. There are over 50 drop-off locations in Seattle and 127 locations within 25 miles of Seattle.
Recycle your ink cartridges. Check out your office supply store or call your current ink company and ask about a cartridge-recycling program.
Recycle your sneakers. Reuse-A-Shoe collects, slices, and grinds up used athletic shoes to make Nike Grind material, which is then used in sports surfaces.

Celebrate Earth Day 2021 with NASA This is so cool!
To celebrate Earth Day 2021, NASA is hosting a virtual Earth Daily event through Saturday, April 24 – focused on how to live more sustainably on our home planet, and exploring the connections between Earth’s atmosphere, water cycle, forests, fields, cities, ice caps, and climate. Registration is free
NASA explained how they are also exploring the connections between life on Earth and the agency’s mission to return astronauts to the moon and eventually send humans to Mars. NASA’s Vegetable Production System, known as Veggie, experiments with ways to grow plants in space to give astronauts vital nutrition from freshly grown fruits and vegetables.
Adopt a whole-food, plant-based diet. It's not just good for your health; It’s also one of the best things you can do for the environment.
