Earth Day is Tuesday, April 22nd!

At Seattle Green Cleaner, every day is Earth Day! Below you’ll find steps we can all take to help the environment as well as some great family activities for this year’s Earth Day.

Egg hunt image 1. Use plastic reusable eggs for this year’s Egg Hunt instead of animal eggs. Have a color coordinated egg hunt to keep it fun and interesting. You can only collect your color of egg.
Envirosax image 2. Ditch the plastic shopping bags and always have reusable bags with you.

  • Plastic bags are the second-most common type of ocean refuse, after cigarette butts (2008).
  • Every square mile of ocean has about 46,000 pieces of plastic floating in it.
  • Plastic bags remain toxic even after they break down.
  • Jen loves her Envirosax bags and always has at least 1 in her purse. They roll up into a tiny pouch to fit just about anywhere.

Leaf foot prints recycle 3. Calculate your footprint to see the impact you’re having on the planet with Earth Day Network’s Footprint Calculator.

4. Reduce energy consumption. Almost half of the greenhouse gas emissions in the US come from the energy we use to power our homes and cars. With Earth Day Energy Center you’ll get started on the path to reducing your energy use, lowering your utility bills and helping the environment. Get started today.

If you’d like to be an environmental activist, you can start over a cup of coffee and an internet connection. Check out these websites for environmental activism or take action in your area here. If you decide to stay in, here are 4 cocktails to help you celebrate Earth Day.
Leaping Bunny logo 6. Shop Cruelty-Free wherever you go. The Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics’ (CCIC) Leaping Bunny Program administers a cruelty-free standard and the internationally recognized Leaping Bunny Logo for companies producing cosmetic, personal care and household products. The Leaping Bunny Program provides the best assurance that no new animal testing is used in any phase of product development by the company, its laboratories or suppliers.Get the Cruelty-Free app for Android here or the Cruelty-Free app for iPhone here.
Meatless Mondays 7. Eat less meat. The meat industry generates nearly 1/5 of the man-made greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. Help make a difference by limiting (or omitting) your meat consumption. It can be as little as having a Meatless Monday each week. Want to take a class or experience Seattle’s annual Vegfest? Check out Vegetarians of Washington.
Environmental education saves the day 8. Support Environmental Education. Congress is currently setting the federal budget for the fiscal year 2015 and they’ve left our funding for environmental education! Join us in calling on Congress to support environmental education in the 2015 budget. Here’s a great form for emailing your Member of Congress.
story of stuff project 9. Watch the Story of Stuff. The Story of Stuff exposes the connections between a huge number of environmental and social issues, and calls us together to create a more sustainable and just world. It’ll teach you something, it’ll make you laugh, and it just may change the way you look at all the Stuff in your life forever.
SGC's Green Drain Cleaner ingredients 10. Make your own eco-friendly drain cleaner using our recipe. Commercial drain cleaners are toxic to your health and that of your family and pets. They’re also toxic to the environment, especially to ground water, and they can cause pipes to corrode and damage septic systems. There’s no good reason for using toxic, commercial drain cleaners.
